Brisbane gets serious rain. Between summer storms and the occasional deluge that comes out of nowhere in autumn, a poorly draining yard can go from “a bit soggy” to “a genuine problem” very quickly.
The frustrating part is that most drainage problems are invisible until it rains — and by then, you’re already standing in a puddle wondering what went wrong.
Here’s how to spot a drainage issue early, understand what’s causing it, and know what kind of fix is actually going to work.
Signs Your Yard Has a Drainage Problem
You don’t need to be an engineer to recognise these warning signs.
Water pooling after rain
If patches of your yard hold water for more than a few hours after rain — especially if they take a day or more to drain — your soil isn’t moving water away fast enough. This could be a grading issue, a compaction issue, or a lack of drainage infrastructure underneath.
Soggy patches in dry weather
If parts of your yard are consistently wet even when it hasn’t rained, you may have a leaking pipe, a high water table in that area, or a spot where water from surrounding properties is finding its way in.
Lawn dying in specific areas
Grass that goes yellow or dies off in patches — particularly in low-lying spots — is often drowning, not drying out. Roots can’t breathe in waterlogged soil.
Erosion or soil washing away
If you lose topsoil every time it rains, or see channels forming in your garden beds, water is moving across your yard faster than the ground can absorb it. That means it’s also carrying your soil with it.
Water getting close to your house
This is the serious one. If water pools near your foundations, or you notice damp patches on internal walls after heavy rain, you have a drainage problem that needs immediate attention.
What Causes Poor Yard Drainage?
Understanding the cause matters — because not every drainage problem has the same solution.
Poor grading
The slope of your yard should direct water away from your house, not toward it. Many Brisbane backyards — particularly on older blocks — were never graded properly, or have been altered over the years by raised garden beds, added concrete, and ad-hoc landscaping that changed the natural flow of water.
Compacted soil
Clay-heavy soils (common across South-West Brisbane) compact easily, especially in high-traffic areas. Compacted soil can’t absorb rainfall fast enough, so water sits on the surface instead of soaking in.
No subsurface drainage
Some yards simply don’t have the underground infrastructure — ag-pipe, soakage pits, or stormwater connections — to handle the volume of water they receive. When the topsoil saturates, there’s nowhere for excess water to go.
Blocked or inadequate stormwater
Older properties may have stormwater pipes that are undersized, collapsed, or blocked with roots. If water can’t exit the property efficiently, it backs up across the yard.
What Actually Fixes It
The right fix depends entirely on what’s causing the problem.
Regrading the yard
If the issue is slope and direction of flow, the ground may need to be cut and reshaped so water moves the right way. This is excavation work — not something you can fix with topsoil and mulch.
Installing ag-pipe drainage
For waterlogged areas, perforated ag-pipe buried in trenches filled with gravel creates a pathway for water to move underground toward a stormwater outlet or soakage area. This requires trenching — typically 300–600mm deep depending on the site.
Creating a soakage pit
On properties where stormwater connection isn’t practical, a soakage pit gives water somewhere to collect and slowly absorb into the ground. These need to be sized correctly for the catchment area.
Connecting to stormwater
Where possible, connecting surface drainage to the property’s stormwater system is the most effective long-term solution. A plumber handles the connection — an excavation contractor handles the trenching to get there.
Don’t Leave It
Drainage problems don’t fix themselves. They tend to get worse over time as soil compaction increases, pipe blockages build up, and the ground settles further out of shape.
The good news: most drainage jobs on residential Brisbane blocks are straightforward once you get the right machinery in. The challenge is often access — especially in the older suburbs where the only way to the back yard is through a 750mm side gate.
