Planning a backyard makeover is exciting. New lawn, garden beds, maybe a deck or pergola. But before the turf goes down and the plants go in, there’s a question most Brisbane homeowners don’t think to ask: does the ground need work first?
The answer is often yes — and getting it wrong can cost you far more than the landscaping itself.
Why the Ground Matters More Than the Garden
A beautiful backyard is built from the ground up — literally. If the soil underneath is poorly graded, compacted, or has drainage issues, even the most expensive landscaping job will struggle within a couple of seasons.
Common problems that show up after the fact:
– Water pooling after rain, killing lawn and garden beds
– Retaining walls shifting because the soil beneath wasn’t properly prepared
– Lawn dying off in patches due to poor drainage or uneven subsoil
– Tree roots or old stumps causing upheaval after new plants go in
These aren’t hypothetical problems. They’re what shows up regularly on Brisbane residential sites — especially in the older suburbs of South-West Brisbane where yards have been through multiple owners and years of amateur landscaping fixes layered on top of each other.
When You Definitely Need Excavation First
There are situations where calling an excavator before your landscaper isn’t optional — it’s essential.
1. You’re Installing New Drainage
If your yard floods, holds water, or has a low point where water sits after rain, no amount of mulch and topsoil will fix it. You need to address the drainage underground first — either by installing ag-pipe drainage, reshaping the grade of the yard, or both.
This requires excavation. And if your yard has narrow access (a common situation in older Brisbane homes), it requires a tight-access excavator.
2. You’re Adding a Retaining Wall
Retaining walls need footings, and footings need to go into stable ground below the topsoil layer. Getting the excavation right — depth, width, and angle — is what determines whether a retaining wall lasts 20 years or starts to lean after two.
3. You’re Levelling an Uneven Block
Sloped or uneven blocks need to be cut and filled before any surface landscaping makes sense. This isn’t a job for a shovel and a wheelbarrow — it requires machinery, and in tight suburban blocks, often micro-machinery that fits through a side gate.
4. You’re Removing Old Structures
Concrete slabs, old shed bases, overgrown tree stumps, and buried rubble all need to come out before new landscaping goes in. If you skip this step, you’ll be digging it up again in a few years anyway.
What About Smaller Backyard Jobs?
Not every landscaping job needs heavy groundwork. If you’re simply refreshing garden beds, adding new plants, or relaying turf on an already well-drained block, you may be fine to go straight to your landscaper.
A good rule of thumb: if water doesn’t drain away within an hour of rain, or if there are visible dips and high spots across your yard, get the ground assessed before you spend money on the surface.
The Restricted Access Problem
