What a Retaining Wall Is Actually Holding Back
A retaining wall’s job is to hold back a slope of soil that would otherwise move under gravity, water, and time. The visible wall — timber, block, or poured concrete — is just the face of that system. What actually keeps it in place is the footing: a foundation set into stable ground below the topsoil layer, engineered to the height and load of the wall above it.
Get the footing depth or width wrong, or found it on ground that hasn’t been properly excavated and compacted, and the wall has no chance — no matter how well it’s built above ground.
Why Footing Excavation Gets Rushed
Retaining wall footings need to go deeper and wider than most people expect, and the excavation has to be done to spec, not to “looks about right.” On sloped South-West Brisbane blocks — common through Moorooka, Salisbury, Sunnybank and the surrounding hillier suburbs — this work usually happens:
– On the exact slope the wall is meant to correct, meaning awkward, uneven ground for machinery to work on

Signs the Footings Were the Problem
– A wall leaning outward at the top, even though the base still looks straight
– Horizontal cracking a few courses up, rather than random cracking through the face
– Visible gaps opening between wall sections or between the wall and an adjoining structure
– Water pooling at the base of the wall instead of draining away
Any of these point back to the ground below the wall, not the materials used to build it.
Getting Footing Excavation Right
Proper retaining wall footings need excavation to the engineer’s specified depth and width, on stable, correctly compacted ground, with drainage considered as part of the dig — not added afterward. On tight or sloped blocks, that means machinery capable of precise, controlled excavation in confined space, not a full-size excavator working from the widest available angle.
